The Metrotech 9890 is a legacy, industrial-grade utility line and sheath fault locating system manufactured by Vivax-Metrotech. Highly regarded by utility professionals for its ruggedness and simplified user interface, it is primarily engineered to trace underground pipes, cables, and fiber-optic tracer wires, as well as isolate electrical faults.

- Active Modes: 982 Hz, 9.8 kHz, and 82 kHz.
- Passive Modes: 50/60 Hz (power line tracking) and 14–22 kHz (radio frequency tracking).
- Fault Locating: 4.8 Hz (used in tandem with an A-frame for sheath fault pinpointing).
