The Royston Handy Cap IP is a premium, prefabricated solution designed for securing cathodic protection leads on pipes and tanks. Engineered for durability and ease of installation, it provides a thick, highly resistant electrical insulation seal over anode lead wire welds, ensuring long-term protection against corrosion and environmental exposure.

Featuring an elastomeric mastic with superior adhesion, the Handy Cap IP™ is ready for immediate application without the need for additional primers. Its integrated primer technology ensures a strong bond between the cap’s tough outer shell and the surrounding coated surface, reducing installation time and costs. The mastic is firm enough to resist flow at normal operating temperatures while remaining flexible for easy hand-molding around welded areas.

  • Igloo-Shaped Dome Design – Rigid top plastic sheet with an entry tunnel for the lead wire.
  • Elastomeric Compound – Firm enough to resist flow at standard operating temperatures, yet soft enough to mold around irregular welds.
  • Flexible Serrated Edges – Double row of parallel serrations on either side of the dome for better conformity to small-diameter pipes.

The Royston Handy Cap is an easy-to-apply, cost-effective solution for sealing anode lead wire and test wire welds, especially on mill-coated pipe where minimal coating removal is required. Its flexible design allows for easy installation in tight spaces, even at arm’s length.

Application Procedure

  1. Surface Prep – Clean off mud, dirt, grease, or contaminants. Apply Royston RoyBond 747 Primer and let dry (about 5 minutes).
  2. Placement – Remove the release paper, bend the serrated plastic sheet for small pipes, and position the cap over the weld with the tunnel aligned to the lead wire.
  3. Sealing – Press the dome firmly onto the weld, lift the lead wire, mold the black rubber compound around it, then press the wire back down for a secure seal.
  4. Final Protection – If needed, cover any exposed metal with tape or mastic (e.g., Royston Blue Max or Roskote Mastic).
  5. Coating Compatibility – Remove the top plastic release strips before coating or wrapping for a secure waterproof seal.
